Film photography has been gaining a lot of popularity over the past few years and I have been sucked into all the hype around it. I actually started out my photography journey shooting on film but it was too unpredictable and not very cost effective. Plus the stress of wondering if you got your exposures right and if the photos turned out was a little overwhelming. I’ve actually hung onto my film camera and have pulled it out for fun to shoot black and white film (my all time favorite) and in the last couple years have started playing with color film.
As much as I love digital photography, there is something really special about film. It’s nostalgic, has texture, keeps detail in such a beautiful way, and every time I try to explain it I rub my fingers together to try to convey that it just has a feeling that digital photography doesn’t. It has a secret magical sauce that just makes even the most mundane look beautiful.
Shooting family photos on film takes a different approach. You have to slow down and be present. It really helps you to be mindful in what you are shooting, and I’ve found that it helps me stretch creatively in a way that digital doesn’t. While I still shoot digital a majority of the time, film will always be a part of my creative arsenal.
This family session in Heber, Utah was focused on detail, emotion, and connection. We took time to play and to highlight the rich bonds of family in their beautiful space that they call home.
