Motherhood is … I can’t fill in the blank here because we would be here until the end of time. But it is always such a special type of photo session when you are photographing a mother with her children. Mommy and me sessions can be fun, chaotic, annoying (sometimes our kids just pull out some weird stuff when it’s picture time), and they can also be really magical. It doesn’t always feel like it at the time but with this lifestyle session in this Utah apple orchard really captured the connection and some of the craziness that makes motherhood beautiful. The hammock hanging in the orchard brought in a casual and relaxed vibe and the kids loved lounging in it.
I’m going to let you in on a little secret—I have yet to have one person I’ve photographed feel like they were “perfect” enough to have their photos taken. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Perfection isn’t the point, you are the point. Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful, it’s beautiful because it is yours. Don’t wait to get in the frame. All those “flaws” you want to fix first? Your kids don’t see those. They don’t care about those. And trust me, you will look back at those photos years from now and cherish them. Let yourself be seen. Let yourself be photographed. You are beautiful as you are.
Towards the end of the family session, I played with a disposable camera to add a bit of nostalgia. One thing I learned is that disposables don’t do great unless there is a lot of light and a fruit orchard can be a little on the dark side with all the shade. Next time I would get out of the shade an into the sun a little more.
