Film Family Photo Session at Tybee Island, Georgia

Long story short, this session almost didn’t happen. Dayne (my husband) had been working for his brother in Georgia, and towards the end of his time working there, he and his brother’s family had planned for us all to meet up at Tybee Island for a fun little family vacation. Ours was more of a couple’s trip since we left the kids at home.

I had just gotten home from a trip to California and had to pack and leave for Georgia the next day. I was kind of thinking maybe I’d just leave my camera home and just enjoy the trip and be full present. But once I was waiting at the airport, all I could think was how one of my big dreams as a family photographer was to take photos of families and their cute kids on the beach. I literally had that opportunity to photograph my brother and sister-in-law’s family on the beach and was totally going to miss out on one of my favorite things ever!

SO, once we got checked into our cute little airbnb on the beach, the first thing I did was look for a camera shop, and not just any camera shop, but one that sold film cameras, since they usually run cheaper than the nicer digital cameras. We drove into Savannah (only 15 minutes away from Tybee Island) and I bought a Canon EOS 650 and a bunch of rolls of Portra 400. I decided to take a risk and get out of my comfort zone and go for it with a film camera I had never used and, honestly, was not the most user friendly. I was super excited to see how they turned out, and knew that IF they turned out they were going to be awesome. Luckily, once I got my scans back from The Find Lab, I was able to see that I had used the camera correctly (I’m telling you, it was not as easy as my film camera), and I was so in love. The grain and texture that you get from film photos, along with the pretty highlights and shadows, cannot be replicated with digital, and although I primarily shoot digital, I have a soft spot for film. It’s what I started out on when I first became a photographer and I try to supplement sessions with it here and there as often as I can.

Quint and Michelle (in-laws) weren’t necessarily wanting photos of themselves and wanted the focus to be on the kids, but I kind of just made them jump in a few photos anyway, and I’m so glad they did. This babies love their mama and daddy and they were all so cute together.

Overall, this trip was so rad, and even though Georgia in general, and Savannah and Tybee Island, had never been on my radar for places to visit, after visiting I would LOVE to go back and photograph more families there. It’s so beautiful and I would HIGHLY recommend a couple’s getaway or honeymoon there. We found all kinds of killer places to eat, I was introduced to cheesy grits (life changed), and the trees in Forsyth Park are incredible. Anywho, on to the photos.
