WEDDING PLANNING ARTICLES, TIPS, TRICKS, AND WEDDING INSPIRATION 2022

A lot of people wonder—do wedding photographers still use film? The short answer to that question is YES. Let’s get into the long answer though of why taking wedding and engagement photos on film and flash film photography is a trend that has made a huge comeback in the photography industry and is a wedding trend of 2022 that I would LOVE to see stick around.

I remember back when I first started out as a photographer in Utah, I was shooting on a 35 mm film camera on black and white film and developing it in the darkroom. And while I did upgrade to a digital camera, I have continued to create work on film, and began to integrate it into my photo sessions for my clients. There has been a debate on whether to use film vs digital photography when documenting candid and authentic images for couples and capturing their memories. One isn’t necessarily better than the other, and, when paired together by your wedding film photographer, results in thoughtfully composed photographs that both capture your memories, and to capture some of the nostalgic, romance that film photography provides. By integrating both film and digital photography, it allows for careful editing and creation of authentic, candid, creative, editorial wedding imagery.

Clients will often wonder, how do you shoot film at a wedding? There really isn’t a right way. That’s one of the cool parts about it. There is such a variety in film mediums to use and ways to shoot it, which means you are going to get unique images every time. A popular trend right now is to shoot flash film photographs. Some of my favorite ways to shoot film are:

  • 35 mm format film camera

  • Holga toy camera

  • Instax cameras, and Instax wide cameras

  • Disposable cameras (in certain settings)

  • Black and white film—a solid classic that is beautiful in a way that only black. and white can be

  • Color film—typically portra 400

  • Film with light leaks. A wash of light crosses the film, giving it a painterly effect. (You’ll see a lot of these in this blog post. They’re the images with the red and pink brushes of light. Some of the black and white film photos have this as well).

The art of wedding film photography lies in the softness of the images, a touch of grain, a wash of light across the film, and a little bit of imperfection in a world where everything feels curated. I hope you can see that as you scroll through these images from past Utah weddings, elopements, and engagement sessions.
